Super Value Tea Set

Hey, I can't wait to post this. It is such a good deal - only HK$28 (US$3.58), inclusive of a cup of tea or coffee. This tea set is only available between 3pm and 5.30pm at Boston Restaurant in Hong Kong, and it is for take away only. Look, its size is just like a regular dish and it is cooked to order. Extremely delicious. So I've decided to do lunch and dinner together. Mmmm, breakfast + lunch is called brunch, what about lunch + dinner? Can someone invent a term for it?

Hong Kong Fast Food - 芙蓉蛋飯

Today I work late. I have therefore decided to go for fast food. The beauty of Hong Kong tea houses / fast food shops is that they can produce a delicious meal in just a few minutes. Another attractive thing is their low prices. My Chinese Omelette Rice costs only HK$32 (US$4.1), waiting time three minutes.

Tofu Hot Pot

I don't always have luck. This tofu hot pot is an example. In cool winter days, Hong Kong people like to go hot pot, either on real fire or dishes serve in a very hot pot.

This hot pot is actually called "salty fish with chicken cubes and tofu hot pot", and came in a set including a bowl of plain rice and a drink. It costed me HK$48, but I thought the shop owner got a net profit of HK$45. Salty fish isn't expensive at all, but I couldn't find more than 1 gram in it. And there was less than 5 grams of chicken. 80% of the whole thing was ginger, garlic and onion. Though it was very hot and kept me warm, but the whole thing was actually tasteless.

Fried rice and fried noodle are very popular Hong Kong fast food. Shanghainese fried noodle has lots of vegetables in it. I like it a lot and it is economic, only HK$30 (US$3.8), no service fee.

Afternoon Tea Set - Extremely Good Deal

After the Chinese New Year holiday, I am quite overloaded. Today, I decide to go on semi fasting. A tea set becomes my food for the day. Tea time (2.30pm - 5.30pm) is a good time to eat good food with little money. My tea set at Cafe de Coral costs only HK$18 (US$2.3).

My 2-course Sichuan fast food dinner costs only HK$30. I only pay an extra HK$3 for a drink of my choice. Weather has been continuously cold in Hong Kong, spicy food is a good way to keep warm.

Anna's comment: Fast food lunch box is another food culture in Hong Kong. Once in a while, I’ll go for a vegetarian lunch, like today. Many restaurants have a fast food counter selling take-away lunch boxes.
